Thanks for both tips, Anton. The banana smell went away on its own in about a day. Good thing too, since I forgot to pack my baking soda. I haven't tried cleaning my hat in salt yet, but even if I can't do it before I get back home, I will definitely do it there. By that point it will be absolutely filthy. Right now, it is merely dingy.
Empty baking soda in your backpack and let it sit for a day or two, it should absorb the smell. Did the paper hat cleaning tip work?
